Burroughs & Chapin Company entered into the outdoor advertising (billboard) industry in 1996 in order to accommodate the marketing needs of the scores of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues contained within the company's 350-acre Broadway at the Beach development. The company purchased 72 signs already located on leased Burroughs & Chapin Company property, purchased Coastal Outdoor Associates for another 88 sign faces and built an additional 15 sign structures. At the close of 1996, the company owned 175 sign faces under its new affiliate, Coastal Outdoor Advertising. Over the next five years, Coastal Outdoor Advertising grew to 375 sign faces. Since then, Coastal Outdoor has grown to more than 1,000 sign faces.
